Generator Prototype

1 – These Caterpillar Model D315 motor/ generator units have been in production for many years. The illustration is from a 1950s catalogue. They are widely used to provide electricity in locations where grid power is not available or to cover supply during breakdown of the public supply.
Prototype details – Four cylinder diesel engine with 41/2“ bore and 51/2“ stroke. producing 70hp at 1600 rpm. The generator has an electrical output of 30 KW at 0.8 power factor. at 1200 rpm.

2 – The model was built for an MWT Meccano Club challenge to build a model incorporating P/N 157 Fan.

3 – This model is for the experienced modeller. Most but not every detail has been supplied so a careful study of the model plan is required. Also note that the text, number in brackets ( ), and photographs have been prepared as the model was dismantled and then reversed to give a theoretical construction. In the description LH and RH are as seen by viewing the model from the generator end.

4 – The P/N 700 Motor represents the exciter attached to the top of the generator. In the model, the motor drives the fan from the generator end by way of driving bands and shafting. The shafting (67) runs in the bosses of three P/N 27c Gear Wheels which will require careful alignment. Substitute one or more of the Gear Wheels with 95T/57T Gear Rings or similar to gain much more tolerance. The built-up battery box and on/off switch can be replaced by a Meccano battery box.
