Meccano Motor Testing Rig

In 1997 Jim Bethune from Boston University, contacted the spanner discussion group for information on designing a test rig for Meccano Motors.  He was sent several articles from Constructor Quarterly on rating Meccano Motors.  Below is a picture of a motor tester his students built, based on an article by Robin Lake (CQ16 June 1992 page16).

Students have built many variations on this theme. The chief problem with the design is that it requires about 16 feet of string for one revolution, so modifications were made.   Students have been able to generate torque/speed curves and then use the curves to predict speeds and forces for their design projects.
